About Swiss Army Luggage

The iconic Swiss Army brand has a fascinating history going back over 125 years. Starting with the birth of the legend, Karl Elsener opening a cutlery workshop in Ibach-Schwyz with his mother supporting him in his endeavors. Swiss Army has a long history of producing high-quality cutlery, and their knives were adopted by the Swiss Army when in 1891 Karl Elsener delivers the first major supply of solider's knives to the Swiss Army.
Separately, a man named Theo Wenger, in 1893 recives ta contract to produce Swiss Army's Model 1890 knife as the second industrial cutlery manufactured of Switzerland. The Swiss Army / Victorinox brand would later go on to acquire the Wenger brand.
Sadly, in 1909, Elsner's mothers dies and Elsner names is company Victoria in honor of his mother. Elsner registers the cross and shield as a trademark. Later the company is renamed Victorinox, a blend of Victoria and inox (an abbreviation of stainless steel in French).
In the 1940s US servicemen in Europe bring home Swiss Army knives after WWII as popular souvenirs. The term Swiss Army Knife was coined by American soldiers due to their difficulty sayin Offiziersmesser (German for officer's knife).
The Swiss Army brand has expanded over the years far beyond pocketknives including watches, luggage, fragrance and travel accessories. In 1978 NASA orders Swiss Army Knives to be issued to astronauts aboard SkyLab for subsequent Space Shuttle missions.
By 2003 travel products were launched. People were able to easily travel around the globe and their was a need for high quality luggage. Wenger enters the luggage and backpack categories with products emphasizing Swiss values at a reasonable price.
In 2005, Victorinox acquires the long standing Genuine Swiss Army Knife manufacturer, Wenger SA which grows the family brands to Victorinox and Wenger.
